Windows Server 2025
What is Windows Server 2025?
Windows Server 2025 is the latest version of Microsoft’s server operating system, ideal for businesses seeking reliable and powerful server management solutions. It offers enhanced security and performance improvements, making it an excellent choice for efficiently managing business applications such as mail and print servers. With a strong focus on reliability, Windows Server 2025 minimizes downtime, which is crucial for maintaining business productivity. The operating system is designed to meet the growing demands of businesses looking to optimize their IT environments.
Below is a table outlining upgrade options from older Windows Server versions to newer ones:
In Windows Server 2022 and earlier versions, upgrades were limited to two versions at a time. However, Windows Server 2025 simplifies this process by enabling upgrades from Windows Server 2012 R2. This significantly streamlines transitions from older versions.
Windows Server 2025 Standard vs. Datacenter
Windows Server 2025 is available in two editions: Standard and Datacenter. The standard edition is suitable for smaller businesses or organizations with basic infrastructure that doesn’t require extensive virtualization. It supports up to two virtual machines per 16 cores, making it ideal for lighter environments. The Datacenter Edition offers advanced features, such as support for a larger number of virtual machines, making it perfect for businesses looking to expand their server environments with advanced virtual networks.
CALs for Windows Server 2025
If you currently have CALs for 2022 or older versions, they are not compatible with Windows Server 2025. New CALs must be purchased to remain compliant.
A Client Access License (CAL) is required to grant users or devices access to Windows Server 2025. Two types of CALs are available:
User CAL: Ideal when one user accesses multiple devices, such as a laptop, tablet, and smartphone.
Device CAL: Suitable for businesses with shared devices, such as in shift work environments, where you pay per device that accesses the server.
How to Access Windows Server 2025 Remotely
In addition to standard User and Device CALs, you can use Remote Desktop Services (RDS) for remote access. RDS requires both RDS CALs and Windows Server CALs, and the RDS CALs must always be activated.
- RDS User CAL: For users who use multiple devices to connect.
- RDS Device CAL: For devices used by multiple users.
CAL licenses are NOT included with Windows Server 2025 and must be purchased separately. Contact our customer service for tailored advice or include CALs in your quote request.
