Windows Server 2019 CALs

The abbreviation CAL stands for "Client Access License" and describes a license that allows a user or a device to access Windows Server 2019. You can choose between the CALs below:

Windows Server 2019 User CAL: What is it?

With a User CAL license, you are responsible for paying for each user who makes use of the services via the server. A user will require a User CAL license, for instance, if one of your workers requires access to the server from various devices. Along with the Server license, this is also available for purchase.

Windows Server 2019 Device CAL: What is it?

Device CAL licensing means that you pay for each device that accesses services through the server. You must pay for each device that uses the server to access services under device CAL licensing. This is especially helpful if you wish to use the license on one device or if fewer devices than users need to access the server.

How to access Windows Server 2019 remotely?

Windows Server can be accessed both locally and remotely. For the local access, users only need standard User or Device CALs explained above. For the remote access to Windows Server 2019 you would need additionally to the standard CALs, Remote Desktop Services (RDS) CALs. The licensing logic is identical to the one applied in the standard CALs. As shown in the flowchart below, the rule of thumb is to license whichever is less – Users or Devices. If your company expects or experiences fluctuations in the amount of employees, then it would be more optimal to license the devices instead of the users with RDS Device CALs (additionally to the standard Device CALs). This licensing variant is also suitable for companies with shift workers. In case the users that need remote access to Windows Server 2019 are fewer than the devices they need to access the server, then RDS User CALs (additionally to the standard User CALs) would be more cost-efficient. In case the users are equal to the devices that need remote access to Windows Server 2019, then you can license whichever one of the two without any cost difference.
